The morning found us at anchor off the coast of Devil Island. Devil Island is an ice free island that is about 2 km long. It features two volcanic nexts joined by a valley, which give it the name Devil Island and they look like to Devil Horns sticking up. This island is also considered an “Important Bird Area” as it is home to 15,000 pairs of nesting Adelie Penguins. Cruising by Zodiac around the area we also saw Cape Well Met where the two stranded parties of the Swedish Antarctic Expedition wandered into each other.

Today was all about the moody scenery. The ice, the rocks, the soaring cliffs, it was all so astoundingly beautiful. And the quiet… it was amazing just how quiet it was.

There wasn’t much wildlife to see, until the very end of our sail when we caught a glimpse of the resident Adelie colony and saw the penguins waddling down the penguin highway.

We are now heading north again, having reached our furthest south location. We are going to cruise around the tip of the peninsula and spend the next few days on the western side of the peninsula. We are just cruising through pack ice and seeing seals and penguins on floating pieces of ice. It’s what I always imagined Antarctica to be….
